CONCEPT : 7 YEAR PROGRAM (2013 - 2020)
Over the last decade or so, the world has seen the systematic rise of Jamaican athletics to its current pinnacle at the top of the global sprint order. Notably, it has not just been Usain Bolt, the World’s fastest human but also the likes of his compatriots: Asafa Powell, Yohan Blake, Shirley-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Sherone Simpson, etc. NONE of these legends were discovered outside Jamaica and ALL train INSIDE Jamaica!! The Corporate World is investing heavily within Jamaica to discover the next generation of athletes!
Incidentally, Ghana, too, has a storied past in the sprints. Ghana’s sprint athletes have mingled with the world’s best, with George Daniels even holding a world sprint record at one point. The likes of Stanley Allotey, Oko Addy, Mike Ahey, J. A. Addy, Alice Anum, Sandy Osei– Agyeman, George Daniels, Ohene Karikari, Hannah Afriyie, Ernest Obeng, Emmanuel Koorah Tuffour, the Myles-Mills brothers, Aziz Zakari, Vida Nsiah, Vida Anim, and the list goes on and on, in enumerating Ghana’s great history of sprinters. These are all Ghanaian sprint gladiators who, in their day, made Ghana proud!
Unfortunately, over the past few decades that pipeline has dried up, such that it has become difficult for Ghana to find a new sprint hero to anchor our national hope and pride on. It is just possible that there could be many more sprint protégés yet to be discovered in Ghana who have the potential to become world-beaters.
FOCUS FROM 2014 to 2020 WILL BE ON THE INTER SCHOOLS & COLLEGES (INTERCO) ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS IN ADDITION TO THE UNDER 10s AND UNDER 13s IN THE COUNTRY
In Ghana Football, besides the senior National Football team, the Black Stars; Ghana has the U23 & U17 stages that feed footballers into the national team. This doesn’t exist in Athletics so Ghana’s Fastest Human (GFH), in partnership with Corporate Ghana have now planned to FOCUS on the U18 students in Ghana for 2014 and beyond, the ones that represent their schools in the Inter Schools & Colleges Athletics Championships (INTERCO). There will also be a focus on juniors Under 10 and under 13 in the basics and private schools.
And since it is the 2020 Tokyo Olympics GFH keeps saying they are looking towards, GFH thought this would be the best plan. This is the same concept as the Boys & Girls High School Athletics Championships in Jamaica!!!!
